Description
This is a 1960s original matchbox label from India with brand name Godavari. Godavari is a major river in south India. The river emerging from the hills seem to indicate that it is probably the point of origin of the river.
From the dots in a perfect grid on this print, it seems to be a screen print. Just a glance would make it appear as a lithograph. 1960s was the time screen printing made an appearance and it is possible that an earlier design made for lithograph was adopted for screen printing.
I have framed it using handmade wooden frames. I make these frames myself using handheld tools, with joinery in the corners.
Original indian lithographs are pretty rare. The bigger posters and God pictures which are hung on walls, often get damaged. Matchbox labels on the other hand have survived far better. I have currently about 300 old Indian labels from the 1950s and 60s. If you want more choice, do message me.
This would also make a great gift for an art/design interested person. Or bring a spot of color, history and culture to your wall.
The size of the label is about 1.5 x 2 inches. The frame size is 5.5 by 3.75 inches.
