Hari is Vishnu, the preserver. Hara is Shiva the destroyer. These two are the ones from the Trinity Brahma, Vishnu & Mahesh that are worshipped. Hari Hara is a concept from the Advaita where they are seen as one unified entity. Advaita apparent from its name itself is non duality. Hari Hara is seen as embodiment of the ultimate reality of the Brahman. Sometimes they are even shown in one body, where vishnu is the left half which is blue and Shiva is the right half which is white. In this particular picture by Raja Ravi Varma, Vishnu and Shiva are shown in different bodies along with their consorts. Vishnu has ShriLakshmi by him. Lakshmi as the embodiment of material wealth is shown giving alms to Shiva who by choice is a mendicant. Shiva has Parvati with Ganesha in her lap.

Though the painter has kept both these dieties separate, he chooses to conjoin Vishnu’s elephant with Shiva’s Nandi. When seen from one side it is an elephant’s head. From the opposite side it is Nandi’s head.
